Kansas City search engine optimization is local search on both sides of State Line Road. A GC in Waldo, a kitchen shop in Overland Park, and a roofer who runs Lee's Summit and Independence are not competing in one blob called "KC." Google ranks you near the work and near the pin. If you treat the metro as a single keyword, you will rank in one pocket and stay invisible in the next.
ServiceLine Pro works with contractors in this market. The playbook below is what we run: Google Business Profile first, then pages and citations that match how people search the metro, then tracking on a geogrid so you can see Overland Park separately from Brookside.
How search actually works in the KC metro
People search "plumber near me," "kitchen remodel Overland Park," "roof repair Lee's Summit," and "HVAC Kansas City." Same trade, different maps. Johnson County (Overland Park, Olathe, Lenexa, Shawnee, Leawood) is a different grid from Kansas City, Missouri neighborhoods and from eastern Jackson County.
Weather writes the calendar. Ice and freeze-thaw hit plumbing and roofs. Hail years spike roofing. July heat fills HVAC boards. Your content and ads should follow that calendar. A generic "Florida HVAC in summer" article does not help you here.
"The goal is a schedule of profitable jobs from the neighborhoods you can serve well. Rankings are a means. We target Top-3 Map Pack in 90 days. That is a target, not a guarantee."
- ·Name the cities you actually roll trucks to. Do not list Lawrence or St. Joseph if you never go.
- ·Decide storefront vs service-area. A shop in the Crossroads can show the address. A home-based crew should hide the house pin and set a service area that matches dispatch.
- ·Expect Map Pack results to change every few miles. Rankings in Prairie Village do not prove Prairie Village plus Northland plus Olathe.
Google Business Profile: the KC front door
When someone searches "ac repair kansas city" during a heat wave, the Map Pack is the storefront. A thin profile loses to the shop that posts jobs, collects reviews, and uses the right categories.
Categories
- ·Primary category is the main trade. Plumber. General contractor. Roofer. Heating contractor. Do not pick a cute category Google barely uses.
- ·Secondary categories cover the jobs you want: furnace repair, kitchen remodeling, deck builder, tree service. Only add services you will take this month.
Description and photos
You get 750 characters. Who you are, what you do, where you work (Kansas City, MO and Johnson County, KS if that is true), and a phone CTA. Skip keyword stuffing. End with "Call for a same-week estimate" or whatever you can keep.
Upload job photos weekly. Caption the city: "Deck rebuild, Lee's Summit" beats "Project 47." The same photos can live on the website city pages. Google is looking for proof you work there.
Pages and citations that match the metro
A single homepage titled "Kansas City's Best" is not a campaign. Build a page per core service, then city pages only for markets with crews and photos.
- 01 Service pages: kitchen and bath, roofing, HVAC, etc. Write for the owner who needs the job, with process, timeline, and the phone number.
- 02 City pages: Overland Park, Olathe, Kansas City MO, Independence, Lee's Summit, as you truly cover them. Include a real job, a map, and unique copy. Duplicated city templates do not hold.
- 03 NAP: one legal name, one phone, one address format on the site, GBP, Apple Business Connect, and the major directories. Yelp as a citation is fine. You do not need Yelp ads.
- 04 Reviews: ask the day the job ends. A Lee's Summit kitchen should say Lee's Summit in the review when the customer writes it. See the role of reviews in local SEO.
For the ranking model behind this, read why local SEO matters and how to rank on Google Maps. The KC-specific work is the grid: measure pins across the cities you sell, not a single desktop search from the office.
"The goal is a schedule of profitable jobs from the neighborhoods you can serve well. Rankings are a means. We target Top-3 Map Pack in 90 days. That is a target, not a guarantee."
What it costs and how we track it
SEO campaigns are $3,000 a month. AI SEO and extra link building are +$1,500 a month each, only with active SEO. We track Map Pack on a geogrid so Kansas City, Missouri and Johnson County are not averaged into one fake score. If the 90-day Top-3 target is missed, we keep working.
Paid search is a separate decision. Google Ads run with a $0 agency fee, typically around $5,000 a month in spend in a competitive metro, with leads often inside 7 days. Use ads for the cities where the grid is still weak.
Should I have two Google profiles, one in Kansas and one in Missouri?
Only if you have two real premises that customers can visit, with separate staff and signage. Two fake pins for one crew is a policy risk. One accurate profile plus a service area that matches dispatch is the usual setup. Ask before you create a second listing.
